Hillshading applies light effects to a planar map giving the map a three dimensional look. Cartograph supports offline hillshading based on NASA SRTM elevation data.
Automatic download: If selected then missing SRTM data is automatically downloaded from the internet.
Brightness factor: This variable influences the brightness of the shading effect.
Generally hillshading is calculated over large areas of the map and then cut into smaller tiles. Due to technical and performance reasons Cartograph calculates hillshading on a tile basis. This can lead to seams between tiles. For high quality hillshading it is recommended to use an online hillshading service or hillshading tiles stored in a mbtiles database.
